Been in a car accident on the Gold Coast? The days after a crash can be really overwhelming. The last thing you need on top of your recovery is trying to figure out how the CTP process works. Our GPs handle CTP claims from the first appointment and know exactly what your insurer needs. You just focus on getting better.

Queensland’s CTP scheme covers medical treatment, rehabilitation and lost income for people injured in motor vehicle accidents. You do not have to be at fault to receive treatment. Your GP is central to the whole process, and our doctors are experienced in managing CTP patients from their first visit right through to discharge.

How CTP Claims Work in Queensland

Queensland runs an at-fault CTP scheme regulated by the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC). If you were injured in an accident caused by another driver, you can make a claim against their CTP insurer. There are three licensed CTP insurers in Queensland: Suncorp, Allianz and QBE.

Here is how it generally works:

  1. Report the accident to police If you haven’t already, report the crash and get a QP reference number. You will need this for your claim form.
  2. See a GP as soon as possible The sooner you see a GP after the accident the better, both for your health and your claim. Your GP documents your injuries at the time, which becomes part of your claim record. Delays in seeking treatment can complicate a claim.
  3. Lodge a Notice of Accident Claim Form This form is available from MAIC or directly from Suncorp, Allianz or QBE. You can find the at-fault vehicle’s CTP insurer using MAIC’s online CTP check. Your GP can help document the medical information required.
  4. Your insurer assesses the claim The CTP insurer of the at-fault vehicle manages your claim. They will arrange and pay for reasonable and necessary medical treatment, rehabilitation, and compensation for lost income while you recover.
  5. Ongoing treatment and recovery Your GP keeps managing your care, provides progress reports to the insurer and refers you to specialists when needed. Our team works with all three Queensland CTP insurers.

See a GP quickly after an accident. Even if you feel fine at the time, some injuries like whiplash, concussion and soft tissue damage can take days to show up. Getting a documented assessment early protects your health and makes your claim much stronger from the start.

What CTP Covers

Queensland CTP covers personal injury caused by motor vehicle accidents. It does not cover damage to vehicles or property. Covered costs can include:

If you or someone you know sustained serious injuries in a motor vehicle accident, they may be eligible for support through the National Injury Insurance Scheme Queensland (NIISQ). The NIISQ provides lifetime care regardless of who was at fault. Our GPs can help work out whether you are eligible and get the right referrals in place.

Medicare and CTP

You can continue to use Medicare for GP appointments and most scans while your CTP claim is being processed. This helps cover out-of-pocket costs in the early stages before the insurer takes over. Your GP will walk you through what to claim and what to expect at your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first after a car accident on the Gold Coast?

Make sure everyone is safe and call 000 if there are injuries. Report the accident to police and get a QP reference number. Then see a GP as soon as you can. Even if you feel okay, some injuries show up in the days after a crash. Getting an assessment early protects your health and your claim.

Do I need to be at fault to make a CTP claim?

No. If another driver caused the accident, you can claim against their CTP insurer for your medical treatment, rehabilitation and lost income. If you were at fault, you may still be able to access support through the NIISQ for serious injuries.

How do I find out which insurer covers the at-fault vehicle?

Head to maic.qld.gov.au and use their online CTP check with the at-fault vehicle’s registration number. The three CTP insurers in Queensland are Suncorp, Allianz and QBE. If you are not sure, give our reception a call and we can help point you in the right direction.

Can I use Medicare while my CTP claim is being processed?

Yes. You can keep using Medicare for GP appointments and most scans while your claim is being sorted out. It helps with out-of-pocket costs in the early stages. Just be aware that Medicare benefits you receive may need to be paid back once your CTP claim is finalised.

Do you see patients for psychological injuries after a car accident?

Yes. Anxiety, PTSD and sleep problems after an accident are recognised CTP injuries. Our GPs can assess and document what you are going through, set up a Mental Health Treatment Plan and refer you to our onsite psychologist. CTP covers reasonable psychological treatment.

What is the NIISQ and who is eligible?

The NIISQ provides lifetime treatment and care for people seriously injured in motor vehicle accidents in Queensland, regardless of who was at fault. Eligible injuries include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, severe burns, limb amputations, permanent blindness and brachial plexus injuries. Your GP can help work out if you are eligible and get the right referrals in place.

How soon should I see a GP after an accident?

As soon as you can, ideally within 24 to 48 hours. A documented GP visit close to the accident date is really important for your claim. The longer you wait, the harder it can be to connect your injuries back to the crash. Call us on (07) 5612 7830 and let reception know it is a CTP matter so we can get you in quickly.

Do you provide physiotherapy for CTP patients?

Yes. We have two Doctors of Physiotherapy based at our clinic. Your GP can refer you straight to our physio team as part of your treatment plan, so everything stays in one place. CTP covers reasonable and necessary physio as part of your rehab.
