Australian men visit a GP far less often than women — and it shows in the health outcomes. Heart disease, prostate cancer, skin cancer, and mental health conditions are all areas where early intervention makes a real difference, but they only get picked up if you actually show up.
Our Southport GPs are straightforward to talk to. There’s nothing you can’t raise with us — whether it’s something you’ve been ignoring for years, something awkward you’d rather not discuss, or something that’s genuinely worrying you. We’ve heard it all and we won’t rush you out the door.
Men die an average of 4 years earlier than women in Australia. Much of this gap is preventable. Regular GP check-ups are one of the most effective things you can do to stay ahead of problems before they become serious.

Key Areas of Men’s Health
- Heart Health and Cardiovascular Risk Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australian men. Many of the risk factors — high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity — have no obvious symptoms until something goes wrong. A routine health check with your GP can pick these up early and give you a clear picture of your risk. We can run blood tests, check your blood pressure, and talk through lifestyle changes or medication if needed.
- Prostate Health Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men. In its early stages there are often no symptoms, which is why regular screening conversations matter. If you’re over 50 — or over 40 with a family history of prostate cancer — it’s worth talking to your GP about a PSA test. We’ll explain what the test involves, what the results mean, and help you make an informed decision.
- Mental Health Around 1 in 8 Australian men experience depression, and suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 55. Men are less likely to seek help, and more likely to put it off until things get serious. Our GPs have these conversations regularly — there’s no right or wrong way to start. If you’re not feeling yourself, that’s enough of a reason to come in. We can also arrange a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan giving you access to Medicare rebates for psychology sessions.
- Skin Cancer Queensland men are among the highest-risk groups for skin cancer in the world. Outdoor work, sport, and a cultural reluctance to cover up all play a role. If you haven’t had a skin check in the last couple of years — or ever — it’s time. Our skin cancer clinic is run by GPs accredited by the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. Checks are thorough, quick, and could genuinely save your life.
- Erectile Dysfunction Occasional issues are normal and usually linked to stress, alcohol, or fatigue. Persistent erectile dysfunction is worth investigating — it can be an early sign of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or hormonal issues. It’s one of the most common things GPs see in men, and there are effective treatment options. No need to put it off.
- Testosterone and Hormonal Health Low testosterone can cause fatigue, low mood, reduced libido, and difficulty building muscle — symptoms that are easy to dismiss as just getting older. A simple blood test can check your levels. If they’re low, your GP can discuss what options are available and whether treatment is appropriate for you.
- Sexually Transmitted Infections STI screening is straightforward, confidential, and important regardless of your relationship status. If you’re sexually active and haven’t been tested recently, a routine screen is a sensible precaution. We treat all sexual health consultations with complete privacy.
- Weight and Lifestyle Weight management, diet, exercise, alcohol, and sleep all have a significant impact on long-term health. Our GPs take a practical approach — we’re not here to lecture you. If you want to make changes and need some structure or support, we can help with that. We also have an onsite dietitian for patients who want more detailed nutritional guidance.
- ADHD ADHD in men is often undiagnosed well into adulthood. If you’ve spent years struggling with focus, impulsivity, disorganisation, or emotional regulation — and wondered if there might be something behind it — it’s worth raising with your GP. Queensland GPs can now assess and manage ADHD for adults. Find out more about ADHD assessments at Southport Metro.
Men’s Health Checks — What to Get and When
Most men don’t know what health checks they should be having, or how often. Here’s a straightforward guide based on Australian recommendations:
The best time to start regular check-ups is before something goes wrong. If you haven’t seen a GP in the last 12 months, booking a general health check is a good starting point. We’ll go through your history, run any relevant tests, and flag anything worth keeping an eye on.
- Blood pressure — every 2 years from age 18
- Cholesterol — from age 45 (35 with risk factors)
- Blood glucose / diabetes — from age 40
- Bowel cancer screening — from age 45
- Prostate (PSA) — discuss from age 50
- Skin check — annually in Queensland
- Mental health — whenever something doesn’t feel right
- STI screening — based on sexual activity
Work Injuries and WorkCover
Men make up the majority of WorkCover claims in Queensland, particularly in construction, trades, and manual work. If you’ve been injured at work, our GPs can assess your injury, provide a certificate of capacity, complete the required paperwork, and refer you to our onsite physiotherapy team for rehabilitation.
Frequently Asked Questions
I haven’t seen a GP in years. Where do I start?
A general health check is the right starting point. Book a standard appointment and let reception know it’s been a while. Your GP will go through your history, check your blood pressure, discuss any concerns you have, and order relevant blood tests. It’s a low-pressure appointment with no agenda other than getting a clear picture of where you’re at.
Is talking about erectile dysfunction going to be awkward?
It won’t be for us. GPs have this conversation regularly — it’s one of the most commonly raised men’s health concerns. The more relevant question is whether it’s a standalone issue or a sign of something else worth investigating. Either way, there are effective options and it’s worth talking about.
When should I get a prostate check?
Australian guidelines recommend discussing PSA testing with your GP from age 50, or from age 40 if you have a family history of prostate cancer. The decision to test involves weighing benefits and risks, which your GP can talk through with you properly.
Do you have male GPs available?
Yes. If you’d prefer to see a male doctor, mention it when you book and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. Call reception on (07) 5612 7830 or book online and add a note.
What does a men’s health appointment cost?
We are a private billing clinic. Standard consultations start from $90 with a Medicare rebate applying. A gap fee applies for all patients. Call us if you have questions about costs before booking.
Can I get a mental health referral without telling people why I’m going to the GP?
Yes. Your consultation is completely confidential. You don’t need to explain to anyone why you’re seeing a doctor. If you want to discuss how you’ve been feeling and explore what support is available, just book a standard appointment — you don’t need to label it as a mental health visit.
